Background

I come from an environment where technology was highly discouraged, if not banned. In a way it benefitted me; meant that instead of being addicted to video games as a child I was addicted to reading, legos, and strat-o-matic baseball cards. My dad even gave me his cards from the 80’s, and I treasured the mythical AAA base-runner Rickey Henderson. For a time I lost it and I’d make wishes at 4:44pm that I’d one day find the card. It’s lost now.

At school we learned cursive, string games, and to identify skunk cabbage in the woods. We played capture the flag, but my friend and I hid the flag too well which kinda broke the game. We slept in a teepee and woke up at sunrise to milk the cows across the street. We snuck out and hid from our teacher chaperone under the piano in the Eurythmy room.

Phones were banned in high school, so was typing notes, and there were certainly no CS classes offered. Math sufficed. For my independent senior project I decided to teach myself to harness this magic, until it was demystified and materialized into an Asteroids clone built in Python. Before ChatGPT, this was an accomplishment.

I decided I’d attend the college closest to Waldorf: Wesleyan. I didn’t want to choose between art and CS. I made an art instagram account with the bio “Aspiring starving artist”. It’s since been abandoned. I realized that CS is art too: “Every creative thought is art” said Beuys.
